Day 3Explore São Miguel

Our first day on the island of São Miguel will include a walking tour of the area, specifically the capital at Ponta Delgada. We will explore popular tourist destinations as well as historic locations and eat at a small, local restaurant.

This walking tour is key to better understanding the history of settlement on the Islands and why agriculture and the environment along with eco-tourism are a key factor in today’s Azorean economy.

Day 4Exploring Sustainable Farming Legacies: A Tea & Pineapple Plantation Odyssey in Azores

Today, our focus shifts to the fascinating world of tea and pineapple plantations, offering a hands-on exploration of Azores’ sustainable farming heritage.

Embarking on a Tea & Pineapple Plantation Tour, we’ll delve into the intricacies of the island’s agriculture, uncovering the rich history and traditions that define sustainable farming here.

Our first stop takes us to a tea plantation, where we’ll gain insights into the tea-growing process. Keep an eye out for the unique “shaded tea plantation” technique—an innovative approach fostering a thriving ecosystem and promoting soil moisture retention. This visit will provide a firsthand look at how sustainability is woven into the fabric of the tea plantation’s business model.

Next on our agenda is a journey to a pineapple plantation. Here, we’ll not only witness the cultivation process but also understand how sustainable farming practices play a pivotal role in shaping the plantation’s operations.

An exciting highlight awaits as we get the chance to meet the owners of both plantations. These encounters present a valuable opportunity for interviews, allowing us to pose insightful questions that touch on sustainability impact across environmental, societal, and economic dimensions.

Through these engagements, we aim to deepen our understanding of how these plantations contribute to Azores’ sustainability story. It’s not just about tea and pineapples—it’s about the people, the practices, and the positive impact on the island’s ecosystem and community.
